Background on Objective-C:

Objective-C is a reflective, object-oriented programming language that enhances the C language with Smalltalk-style messaging. It has become predominantly used on Apple’s Mac OS X and iOS platforms—both derived from the OpenStep standard, although not fully compliant. Objective-C serves as the primary language for Apple’s Cocoa API, originally stemming from NeXT’s NeXTSTEP operating system. Programs written in Objective-C that do not depend on specific libraries can be compiled across systems supported by gcc or Clang compilers.

The language was developed in the early 1980s by Brad Cox and Tom Love at their company, Stepstone. Drawing inspiration from Smalltalk, Cox focused on creating reusable software components by integrating object-oriented features into C through a pre-processor. This precursor was called "OOPC" (Object-Oriented Pre-Compiler). The development effort was influenced by Cox's interest in software reusability and Love’s exposure to Smalltalk-80 through Schlumberger Research. Their collaboration eventually led to the formation of Productivity Products International (PPI), which commercialized an Objective-C compiler with class libraries.
